Edith Houghton Dies: Baseball Legend Was 100

Today News : Edith Houghton was making a name for herself in baseball long before the ladies who inspired “A League Of Their Own” were doing their thing in skirts, and as awesome as every woman in the game was, Houghton stood out for her drive and early ambition.

In 1922, at age ten, she was the starting shortstop for the Philadelphia Bobbies, an all-girl professional team. As the youngest player on the team, she earned the nickname “The Kid” and wowed audiences and fellow players alike with her skills. She would go on to play against men’s teams as the Bobbies traveled extensively, even going overseas to Japan. When WWII began, she made the move to the Navy and played for their team, as well.

By the time she was 35, Houghton decided she’d done all she could for her teams on the field and wanted to make her mark elsewhere in the game. When she got home from the war, she landed herself a job as a scout for the Phillies and was the first woman hired to do so in the major leagues.

In 2006, Houghton was honored to be featured in the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, where one of her uniforms is on display. The legendary player passed away on February 2 at the age of 100.

Marino Baby’s Mother Donna Savattere Spotted In London

Donna Savattere, the mistress of former Miami Dolphins quarterback Dan Marino, was recently photographed in London, where she has been keeping a low profile since news of the affair broke last month.

Savattere has been hiding out in southwest London with her husband, Nahil Younis, and her children — including her 7-year-old daughter with Marino, Chloe. The couple married in 2009, four years after Savattere’s affair with Marino, who has been married for 28 years and has six children with his wife, Claire.

According to the New York Post, Savattere and Younis live in a $3.4 million, five-bedroom home in the Wandsworth neighborhood. Last week, the couple planted bushes in front of their home to shield them from prying eyes.

“We thought it was odd,” a neighbor said. “They are very secretive and don’t talk to anyone.”

As previously reported by The Inquisitr, Marino admitted to having an affair with Savattere on the same day he celebrated his anniversary with his wife. He said in a statement:

“This is a personal and private matter. I take full responsibility both personally and financially for my actions now as I did then. We mutually agreed to keep our arrangement private to protect all parties involved.”

Sources said Marino paid Savattere millions of dollars to keep the affair quiet, but the matter had apparently already been revealed in the 2010 book, Honeymoon Junkie: Everything but the Girl. In the book, author Shaun C. Hawkins talks about a woman named “Darien” who has a small child named Zoe with a mysterious “Mr. Big.” Hawkins theorizes that the mystery man is Marino and that “Darien” is Savattere.

3 killed in helicopter crash on set of reality TV show in California

LOS ANGELES –  Three people were killed Sunday in a pre-dawn helicopter crash in a rural area of northern Los Angeles County while filming for a new reality TV show for the Discovery Channel.
The copter crashed at about 3:40 a.m. at the popular filming location of Polsa Rosa Ranch in the city of Acton, Los Angeles County Fire dispatcher Robert Diaz said.
All three people aboard died, Diaz said. Their names weren't immediately released.
The show, listed on a filming permit as an untitled military-theme TV program, had not yet been aired or announced by Discovery, channel spokeswoman Laurie Goldberg said.
"A production company was shooting a show for Discovery Channel when this tragic accident occurred," the station said in a statement. "We are all cooperating fully with authorities. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the families."
The show's production company, Eyeworks USA, best known for creating NBC's "The Biggest Loser," also issued a statement expressing sympathies to the victim's families and saying they were cooperating with authorities.
The company had been approved to use a helicopter for a reality TV show shooting at the ranch from Saturday afternoon until Sunday morning, said Philip Sokoloski, a spokesman for FilmLA, which processes filming permits for location shootings in the Los Angeles region.
Records also showed Crossbow Helicopters received approval to participate in filming from the Federal Aviation Administration.
"We wouldn't have referenced helicopter activity if we didn't already have pre-approval from the FAA," Sokoloski said.
The cause and other circumstances surrounding the crash are still unknown, Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Allen Kenitzer said.
Television footage showed mangled wreckage in a rugged canyon area near Soledad Canyon Road.
According to its website, Polsa Rosa is a "movie ranch" where film crews can utilize a variety of terrains as well as two airstrips. The ranch, according to the Internet Movie Database, was used in "Windtalkers" and last year's remake of "Red Dawn."
It was the site of another entertainment industry death in September, when a 48-year-old crew member died of an apparent heart attack while underwater in scuba gear on the set of the upcoming Johnny Depp film "The Lone Ranger"
Sunday's wreck was also just 25 miles from a similar rural spot in Santa Clarita where actor Vic Morrow and two children were killed in another helicopter crash while filming the "Twilight Zone" movie in 1982.
That crash brought changes in production restrictions and led to producer John Landis and four others being charged with involuntary manslaughter. All were acquitted.

Football - Redknapp unsure over Odemwingie deal

Harry Redknapp thinks Peter Odemwingie's Twitter rant was ill-advised after West Brom revealed they had turned down a second bid from QPR for the wantaway striker.

News :    Odemwingie took to Twitter over the weekend to hit out at West Brom and their fans, who had criticised him for requesting to leave the Hawthorns amid interest from Redknapp's Rangers.
And speaking after West Brom announced they had turned down a second bid for the Nigeria international, Redknapp told a press conference: "I don't know (whether the transfer will go ahead). It's a bit of a difficult situation for West Brom. It's not worked out in an ideal way. The whole situation has become a bit too public really hasn't it?"
He continued: "I am sure West Brom are not too happy with the way it's gone. We made an enquiry. The enquiry leaked out and obviously the player decided he wanted to come to London and that's how it has worked out.
"I think too many people get involved in Twitter."
Rangers had an initial £2million bid turned down at the start of the January window, and it was confirmed by the midlands club on Monday that a second offer has also been rejected.
West Brom's sporting and technical director (designate) Richard Garlick said in a statement: "QPR have made a second, improved offer for Peter, which we have turned down.
"As we have repeatedly stated, we have no need or desire to sell our core players.
"Since we turned down Peter's transfer request, he has made his position clear in a statement to the media and via his personal Twitter account.
"This matter will be dealt with internally."

Premiership - London Welsh sign Argentina's Tiesi

London Welsh have announced the signing of Argentina Test centre Gonzalo Tiesi.

News:  The 27-year-old has previously had Aviva Premiership spells with London Irish and Harlequins, in addition to playing for French club Stade Francais.
He made his international debut in 2004, going on to feature in the last two World Cups, and has so far won 32 caps. He was part of the Argentina side that beat Wales in Cardiff last November.
Tiesi will move to London Welsh from the Buenos Aires-based San Isidro club.
"The signing of Gonzalo Tiesi is a very significant one by the club," London Welsh head coach Lyn Jones said.
"He is a proven and very experienced Premiership player who has had positive spells at London Irish and Harlequins in the past.
"He's also a player of true international quality and he proved himself again over the autumn period with Argentina.
"We look forward to Gonzalo adding a great deal to the playing and training environment at London Welsh."

Formula 1 - Lotus unveil to kick off 2013 F1 season

Lotus will officially kick off the build-up to the 2013 Formula 1 season on Monday night when it unveils its new E21 during an online launch.

News :   The Enstone-based outfit is hoping that the new car builds on the momentum of its successful E20 - which delivered a victory in the hands of Kimi Raikkonen in Abu Dhabi last November.
With only subtle changes to the regulations for this year, allied to the fact that Lotus managed to bounce back from a mid-season loss of momentum, team principal Eric Boullier told AUTOSPORT over the winter that he would be satisfied if his team could begin the new campaign in the same shape as it ended last year.
"I would be very happy to start the season with the same car performance we had last year relative to everyone else," Boullier told AUTOSPORT.
"I know both our drivers will be race fit and, let's say, delivering more than 12 months ago.
"On the team front, last year we lost a little bit of ground during the summer, but we know where and we know why it happened. We learned from our mistake and we will not do the same strategy with next year's car development.
"At the same time, we performed well at the end of this season, and found some of our performance back, so it was a good fight until the end. It was good to see Enstone was capable of delivering as much as the bigger teams."
Lotus's car will be unveiled on its own YouTube channel at 7.15pm GMT.
Following the Lotus launch on Monday, McLaren will follow with its unveiling at its Woking factory on Thursday, before both Ferrari and Force India launch their cars on Friday.
